In recent years, and especially since the pandemic, in Portland and beyond, backyard poultry ownership has become quite trendy, with many individuals and families embracing the joys of raising their own chickens and enjoying the rewards of fresh eggs. However, behind the idyllic imagery lies a world of dedication, care, and responsibility that comes with being a backyard poultry owner.
1. Getting Started:
Embarking on the journey of backyard poultry ownership requires careful planning and consideration. Before diving in, it's essential to research local regulations, secure proper housing, and select the right breed of chickens to suit your needs and environment. Whether you're drawn to the robust production of Rhode Island Reds or the colorful variety of Easter Eggers, choosing the right breed sets the foundation for a successful flock.
Before you decide anything, think through the lifespan of the animal. Birds can lay eggs for years, but most of their eggs will be laid in the first 2 years. Will you keep the animals well past their peak egg production? That will require feed and care, and you might not be interested in that.
Are you willing to find a new home for them or do you intend to use them for meat? If your chicken, duck or quail become ill, are you willing to take them to a qualified veterinarian? Many vets will see a bird but lack proper certification and might not be able to properly diagnose an illness or injury.
Many of our chickens at Ogden Fresh are here because their owners no longer wanted them due to a lower egg production. Sometimes their low egg count came from being overweight due to too many treats and not enough exercise. Yes, you can love a chicken into poor health.
2. Daily Care and Maintenance:
Owning backyard poultry is not merely a hobby; it's a commitment to daily care and maintenance. From feeding and watering to cleaning coops and monitoring health, poultry owners must establish a routine that ensures the well-being of their feathered friends. Regular health checks, parasite prevention, and providing adequate shelter from the elements are essential aspects of responsible poultry ownership. Mites and lice can show up almost overnight and can be difficult to treat. In future posts we will be sharing some things that have worked for us in treating some health issues.
3. Egg-cellent Rewards:
One of the most satisfying aspects of backyard poultry ownership is the reward of fresh, nutritious eggs. Unlike store-bought eggs, which may travel long distances and sit on shelves for weeks, home-raised eggs boast superior flavor, vibrant yolks, and higher nutritional value. Plus, there's a sense of pride in knowing exactly where your food comes from and the care that went into producing it. When we first started, we quickly recognized that it is the right thing to do to take care of our birds, but that it means eggs need to be sold at a higher price than what you expect in the store.
In order to sell at a lower price, you have to sacrifice a standard of care. Raising birds allows you to develop empathy for the decisions that farmers often have to make in order to survive.
4. Community and Education:
Being a backyard poultry owner often comes with a sense of community and camaraderie. Whether connecting with other enthusiasts at local poultry swaps or sharing tips and advice online, there's a wealth of knowledge to be gained from the collective experience of fellow poultry keepers. Additionally, educating oneself about poultry health, nutrition, and behavior is crucial for providing the best possible care for your flock. We don't often use veterinary care due to the difficulty of finding prompt appointments as well as the prohibitive costs. However we have successfully treated many a bird over the years all thanks to the generous poultry community you can find in person and online.
In conclusion, while the journey of backyard poultry ownership may require dedication and hard work, we believe the rewards outweigh the challenges. From the satisfaction of collecting fresh eggs each morning to the sense of connection with nature and community, being a poultry owner is a fulfilling and enriching experience. So, if you're considering diving into the world of backyard poultry, roll up your sleeves, embrace the adventure, and get ready to enjoy the egg-cellent journey ahead!
